Genomic Biomonitoring – MiGen Analysis

TBG project summary

Blood-feeding arthropods are vectors for a variety of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, protozoa, metazoa or viruses. In the context of global environmental changes, they constitute a serious threat to public health. The metagenomes of medically relevant and invasive arthropod species and their pathogens will be characterized using culture-independent, high-throughput DNA sequencing methods. The aims are to detect and control the pathogens transmitted by the vectors and to draw conclusions about the biology and future distribution of potential vectors and their pathogens. Another focus is the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) for a more rapid and cost-effective sampling of invasive mosquitoes.

Group expertise / Methods

  • Culture-dependent methods and cloning (microbiota)
  • Species distribution modelling
  • Parasitological analyses (morphology, standard molecular species identification/barcoding)
  • Liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry (in cooperation with H. Bode)
